Geotechnical engineering, also known as geotechnics, is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. It uses the principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics for the solution of its respective engineering problems. It also relies on knowledge of geology, hydrology, geophysics, and other related sciences.

In addition to civil engineering, geotechnical engineering also has applications in military, mining, petroleum, coastal engineering, and offshore construction. The fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology have knowledge areas that overlap, however, while geotechnical engineering is a specialty of civil engineering, engineering geology is a specialty of geology: They share the same principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics, but differ in the application.

About the instructor

Mr. Devendra Shrimal, born and brought up in the Jaipur that is famous as pink city. He did his B.tech from NIT Jaipur. He got placed in construction industry, but he opted for higher education at IIT Roorkee due to his interest in earthquake engineering. He enrolled for Soil dynamics stream in earthquake engineering department at IIT Roorkee for his post-graduation. . His research area was “seismic analysis of pile foundation”. He got placed in L&T Construction as geotechnical design engineer. In L&T construction, he worked at EDRC (Engineering Design and Research Center) Chennai. He was the main geotechnical engineer for an Indian railways project “DFC (Dedicated Freight Corridor)”. He did seismic studies and liquefaction analysis for many projects. He got expertise in the seismic geotechnical studies. He is working in Ramboll India since 2019. He worked on offshore wind farm and high-speed railway projects there. He used international codes for foundation design and get hands on experience in programming tools like Python, VBA and Matlab.
